Throughout my life, some creative enterprise has occupied me
daily. When I was a small child I made drawings of characters
from the Sunday comics. In the Eighth grade I produced a book of
portraits of all the US Presidents. I was Art Editor of my high
school Senior Yearbook and illustrated it with my class cartoons
and candid photographs. Our family genealogy, "The

Thompson Twiggs"(1980) which I co-authored with my sister,
Marie Eberle, contained my drawings of landscapes and portraits
copied from old family photographs. During my career as a Soil
Scientist with the US Soil Conservation Service, I produced
detailed maps, three-dimensional landscape block-diagrams and
landscape illustrations for technical publications. As an
avocation I painted portraits. Upon retirement, I devoted full
time to my portrait painting, poetry and other artworks. A
teacher, Annette Polan, at the Corcoran School of Art, encouraged
me to pursue miniature portrait painting. Developing my skills as

has become the passion and sustenance of my life.
As time passes, my intimate association with Miniature Art,
with Miniaturists worldwide and with a special creative person
keeps me growing as an artist and a person. It is my experience
that working with various media keeps my art fresh and alive.
Drawing enhances sharpness of line when wielding a brush.
Sculpting enhances depth when painting. Words and their rhythm
bring forth a fullness of spirit and expression.
John held one-person shows in Washington, D.C, and Maryland.
He exhibited in many major exhibitions, including the Miniature
Painters, Sculptors and Gravers Society of Washington D.C., and
the Miniature Arts Society of Florida in the US, and the Royal
Miniature Society and Hilliard Society in England. He regularly
won awards for his work and was President of the MPSGS.
John Thompson died on 12th March 2009
